It was felt that the Tuluva Vellala Community, which once occupied a very high place in Society in the Tamil Nadu, had lost it prominence largely due to backwardness in education and lack of organization. Its educational backwardness was mainly due, it was thought, to lack of encouragement, as many of the parents could not afford the expenses of higher education. It was, therefore proposed to start in Madras a scholarship fund on the lines of the Tuluva Vellala Scholarship Fund of Secunderabad, whose excellent work in the cause of education through the efforts of some well-to-do and philanthropic members of that city, was well known to all.
